Pet Wellness Care
Pet dental care often gets put on the back burner when it comes to overall pet wellness, but it’s just as important as your own. If left to their own devices, diseases can develop. Periodontal disease is a serious condition that causes more than pain and discomfort-it can damage your pet’s vital organs if left untreated. Luckily, there’s plenty you can do, the first of which is scheduling an appointment for pet dental care at our animal hospital in Chagrin Falls.
Caring for Teeth and Gums:
A good professional dental cleaning gives your pets a healthy edge. We clean above and below the gumline, taking care to also examine for periodontal pockets, chipped or broken teeth, and other signs of disease. We perform:
- Full mouth dental radiographs
- Scaling and polishing
- Fluoride treatments
- Extractions if needed
Spay and Neuter
Do Right by Your Pet and Community: Spay & Neuter Surgery
It might seem cruel to take away your pet’s natural ability to mate and procreate. However, pet spay and neuter surgeries actually do them, and the local Chagrin Falls pet community, a world of good. Firstly, it helps cut down on the problem of animal overpopulation. Too many unwanted dogs and cats overflow shelters and are subsequently put down. More sterilized pets mean we can better control the population and ensure only responsible breeding is done. Secondly, pets who undergo sterilization have a greater chance at a long and fulfilling life as they avoid the risk of many medical maladies. Finally, their behavior changes give you peace of mind and help keep them out of harm’s way.
Medical and Behavioral Benefits
Spaying or neutering your pet increases the quality of life. Medical benefits give them lasting health, while behavioral changes cause them (and you!) less anxiety so they can focus more on their relationship with you. Keep in mind that while behavioral changes do take place in many animals, it is not always guaranteed as it depends on your pet’s individual personality and characteristics.
The following benefits apply to your sterilized pet:
- Less inclination to roam for a mate
- No heat cycles, which cause frustration and bleeding in dogs
- Possible reduction of urine marking or spraying
- Prevention of uterine infection and cancers
- Minimizes risk of mammary tumors
- Less inclination to roam for a mate
- Subdued aggression
- Possible reduction of urine marking and mounting
- Prevention of prostate problems and testicular cancer
A Deeper Look: Diagnostics at Chagrin Animal Clinic
Our complex diagnostic equipment helps break down your pet’s health into multiple layers so we can more easily pinpoint the source of trouble and address them accordingly. Diagnosing your pet’s symptoms may seem simple, but a surface problem may actually be only a small part of a deeper problem. Running regular tests and screenings helps us catch issues early, giving your pet a better chance at a fast, full recovery.
Full Laboratory Capabilities
Diagnostic equipment comes in many shapes and sizes. Our full Heska lab does it all. While we do often send out some tests, for speedier results we can do just about anything right here in-house. Here’s what our lab is capable of:
- CBC (complete blood count)
- Chemical panel
- Fecal testing
- Cytology (examining skin cells for abnormalities)
- Heartworm testing
- … and more!
Typically, we do general diagnostic tests at your annual wellness exam to screen for abnormalities, parasites, and disease. Staying ahead of the curve with your pet’s health ensures they live longer, healthier lives with you.
In addition to radiology, Chagrin Animal Clinic offers in -house ultrasound. An ultrasound is a very non-invasive modality that allows the doctor to look at the architecture of an organ. Ultrasound can help determine an abnormality in an organ, heart problems, and cancer.
Needless to say, ultrasound has become a very important part of keeping our pets healthy. With the development of new equipment and new techniques, more and more detailed information can be obtained about a pet’s health to easily and accurately detect previously hidden disease.
Video Otoscopy is the use of a short endoscope that uses a video camera to transmit images to a larger screen for magnification. It is very useful in diagnosing and treating chronic ear infections and growths inside the ear.
The veterinary team at Chagrin Falls Clinic is a skilled group of experts, and there’s little we can’t handle. Soft tissue surgeries are all completed in-house.
Before every procedure, we perform a full physical exam as well as pre-anesthetic bloodwork to ensure your companion is healthy enough to undergo anesthesia. To maximize their level of comfort, we also administer pain medication before the surgery so your pet awakens with minimal or no discomfort. Our pain management protocols are specifically designed for your pet, so you can rest assured their dosage is the perfect amount for them.
Surgeries we offer include:
- Soft Tissue
- Spay and neuter
- Mass removals
- Exploratory surgery
- Foreign body removal
- Laceration repairs
- … and more!

Please be sure your pet does not eat anything after 6pm and no water after 10pm the day before surgery. The day of surgery, please have your pet at our clinic between 8:00am – 8:15am. This gives us ample time for pre-anesthetic bloodwork and an exam on your pet before surgery.
